When you’re the only person in the truck, you need software that gets a stop done fast on your phone, bills the customer without a second app, and costs little at your pool count. For most solo operators, I’d look at PoolDial or Skimmer. If the budget is tight, Pool Service Software (PSS) and The Dip App let you start free.
I’m Parker Conley, the founder of PoolDial, so read this as a vendor’s guide rather than an independent ranking. I’ve ranked the products by what a solo operator needs and explained each one’s tradeoffs, and my own picks are labeled as opinion below.
For a solo operator, I’d look at PoolDial or Skimmer. Pick PoolDial if you want a more modern product and direct access to me for support and product input. Pick Skimmer if you want the established default with a long track record.
If every dollar counts right now, start with PSS, which is free up to 10 properties, or The Dip App, which has a free core and charges payment fees.
The ranking
Here’s what I weighed for this size of company, then the products in order.
Price at your pool count. Per-pool and per-location pricing tracks a small route closely, while per-technician and per-user plans charge for the one seat you have. Compare the monthly bill at today’s count and at double it.
One phone, every stop. You do the readings, photos, notes, and invoice yourself. Complete a real stop on your own phone, including one with no signal. Skimmer, PoolDial, and PSS support field work without a signal, and The Dip App lists an offline mode.
Billing without a second system. Check that a completed stop turns into an invoice and a collected payment, and test the QuickBooks or Xero sync with your bookkeeper. Payment processing fees count toward the cost, especially on a free core.
Calls while you’re working. PoolDial includes phone answering. Skimmer’s AI Phone is a $99 monthly add-on. The Dip App did not list phone answering as of our last review. If you rarely miss calls, don’t pay for it.
Room to grow. If you plan to hire, check the bill and the workflow at your first technician. Pool Brain’s $50 a month plus $65 per technician is worth pricing once you add people.
1. Skimmer
Best for: The established default, with technician workflows that work offline and a large public review history

For one person in one truck, Skimmer leads because it is the lower-risk decision. More than 30,000 pool pros use it by its own count, and if you have a question, there is a large support organization and a long public review history behind it: 4.9 from 230 on Capterra and 4.7 from 769 on Google Play as of August 9, 2026. Its technician workflows work without a signal, which counts when you are the only person who can finish the stop.
The entry plan, checked October 29, 2026, is $49 a month for up to 49 locations, so 20 pools or 49 pools cost the same. At 50 you move to $2 per location, or $100 a month. Your limits on the entry plan are real, though: route optimization comes with Scaling Up, not this plan, and AI Phone adds $99 a month if you want calls answered while you work. Test an offline stop that includes an older visit, since much older history may need to download from the cloud.
2. PoolDial
Best for: A modern product and direct founder access, with phone answering included; $2 per pool with a $40 monthly minimum

PoolDial is second on this list and is one of my two solo picks, but I built it, so test my claims. It fits a solo owner who wants one system: a modern app that works offline and syncs when you reconnect, route optimization, invoicing, and 24/7 AI phone answering that captures lead details while you’re working. You also get unlimited users for when you hire, QuickBooks Online and Xero sync, and direct access to me for support and product input.
As checked September 25, 2026, it costs $2 per pool with a $40 monthly minimum, which is $40 at 20 pools and $100 at 50, with a 14-day trial. Skimmer costs $49 at 20 pools, so PoolDial saves little there, and they match at 50. The honest gap is evidence. PoolDial had three five-star App Store ratings as of October 28, 2026, against Skimmer’s 999 reviews, and it has a smaller ecosystem. If an established vendor is what lets you sleep at night, choose Skimmer.
3. Pool Service Software (PSS)
Best for: Free up to 10 properties with every feature included

PSS is third for solo operators because it costs the least of the subscription options here. Every feature is free through 10 properties, and the $49.99 tier runs through 50, as checked August 12, 2026. That is half of what PoolDial or Skimmer cost at a 50-pool route, and it doesn’t give up pool depth: readings, dosages, LSI, chemistry history, invoicing, GPS, offline field work, QuickBooks Online sync, and Stripe payments are all listed. If you use a LaMotte meter or lean on Orenda guidance, those integrations are a real reason to choose it.
The limits are mostly about what you can verify. A property is a body of water, so a pool and spa at one address may count differently than you expect. Public evidence is thin, with 4.1 from 43 Google Play reviews and three Capterra reviews at 3.3 on the same date. I also did not find clear public documentation for a complete outbound export. Ask for a sample, and work a full week of real stops on your phone.
4. The Dip App
Best for: Free core features; card payments cost 3% + $2

The Dip App ranks fourth because its appeal is simple: no monthly software bill. For a solo operator with few customers, that is hard to beat. The free core includes customer management, scheduling, chemical readings with LSI on one screen, invoicing, payments, iOS and Android apps with offline mode, and reminders and arrival alerts. Your customers can also view readings and pay in an app, which is a nice touch for one person with no office.
The cost shows up when customers pay you: 3% + $2 per card payment and $3.50 per ACH transfer, as our August 2026 comparison listed them. A $100 card invoice leaves you $95, so run a month of your actual invoices through that math and compare it with the $49.99 to $115 a month the paid options charge at 50 pools. Our listings also differ on whether Smart Routes still costs $24.99 a month, so ask. No phone answering was listed as of our last review, and QuickBooks details need confirming too.
5. Paythepoolman

Paythepoolman comes last for a solo operator because its pricing advantage mostly shows up with more technicians, and you don’t have them yet. At one technician the published price is $65 a month, whether you service 20 pools or 50, as checked August 12, 2026. That is less than PoolDial or Skimmer at a 50-pool route, but more than PSS, and more than The Dip App’s free core. The appeal grows if you plan to add pools quickly, because the bill doesn’t follow them.
You get a long pool-specific list for that price, including routes, chemical billing, Orenda dosing and LSI, SpinTouch imports, and a customer app. Much of the rest, such as payroll, fleet records, and technician GPS, won’t matter much while you work alone. Some features are add-ons, custom-priced, new, or beta, including QuickBooks Online, so get the list in writing. I find the interface poor, and the 23 public reviews on that date are too few to settle it. Run a real stop on your phone.
These are illustrative estimates from published pricing, not quotes. PoolDial counts serviced pools, Skimmer counts serviced locations, and PSS counts properties, each a body of water, so count yours the way each vendor does. Skimmer’s AI Phone adds $99 a month. The Dip App charges 3% + $2 per card payment and $3.50 per ACH transfer. Add payment processing and any add-ons before you compare.
How to choose
Put your top two or three through the same day of work instead of comparing feature lists:
- Count your pools the way each vendor bills: pools, locations, or properties.
- Price your current route and the route you expect in a year.
- Complete one real stop on your phone, including one with no signal.
- Send an invoice, collect a payment, and test the QuickBooks or Xero sync with your bookkeeper.
- Ask for a sample export so you know your data can leave with you.
