“The salt cell is not working” can describe several different conditions. The pool may have no free-chlorine gain, the cell may report low salt, a red flow light may stop output, cold water may place it in standby, or the owner may see a warning after a recent addition. Diagnose the system in layers.

Define the Complaint as Evidence

Record the customer's observation, current free chlorine, combined chlorine, salinity, water temperature, cell indicators, output setting, pump schedule, and recent chemistry. Note whether the issue is low production, no production, an incorrect display, an alarm, visible scale, or communication loss.

A cell set to 100 percent does not produce chlorine for 24 hours unless flow and power exist for 24 hours. Output percentage, pump run time, and the unit's rated production must be considered together.

Verify Salinity Independently

Use a maintained test method with a range suitable for the pool. Compare the independent result with the cell's reported value and record both. If salt was added recently, confirm it was measured, distributed, and allowed to mix according to the product manual before acting on a new reading.

Read Flow and Temperature First

Many generators will not produce without confirmed flow. Check pump operation, prime, baskets, filter pressure, valve positions, bypasses, and visible flow indication. Do not bypass a flow switch.

Measure Production Over Time

Record free chlorine before and after a controlled operating period while accounting for sunlight, swimmers, debris, algae, cover state, and other demand. A falling pool-level result does not alone prove the cell produced nothing. Production and consumption happen at the same time.

Inspect for visible gas generation only as the manufacturer describes. Never open energized equipment, taste water, or improvise a live electrical test. Use product diagnostics and qualified service.

Inspect Cell Condition and History

Record blade condition, scale, debris, cleaning dates, installation direction, plumbing, and available life or diagnostic readings. Clean only when the manual calls for it and use the stated method. Unnecessary acid cleaning can shorten cell life.

Separate Automation From Generation

An automation system may set output or display a cell status, but that does not make every problem an automation fault. Record local indicators and automation values. Confirm communication without changing unrelated schedules or set points.

Build the Warranty File

Save the distributor invoice, model, serial number, installation date, registration, water records, cleaning history, photos, diagnostic values, and every contact date. State what the service company tested and what the manufacturer or seller must decide.
