Things Pool Pros Wish They Knew Before Starting

A new pool pro in Fort Worth asked the internet for advice. "What are some things you wish you knew about servicing pools before you started?" The answers came from pros with 5, 10, even 20 years of experience. Their advice was surprisingly practical.

Here is what they said.

Chemistry: Keep It Simple

New pool pros often overthink chemistry. They buy every specialty chemical on the shelf and try to fix problems with products before fixing the basics. Experienced pros say the opposite.

That does not mean chemistry is unimportant. It means you should master the fundamentals before reaching for algaecide, phosphate remover, or enzyme treatments. Free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and CYA are the four numbers that matter most. Learn them cold.

Get a Taylor K-2006 drop test kit and learn how to use it. Strips are fast but imprecise. When a pool is green or cloudy, you need accurate numbers. Log every reading in your chemical tracking system so you can spot trends over time.

Get Your CPO Certification

Multiple pros said this was one of the best investments they made early on. The Certified Pool Operator course teaches the science behind water chemistry, filtration, and safety. Even if your state does not require it for residential service, the knowledge pays for itself.

Some pros had mixed feelings about the class itself. One said it mostly taught him which pages to look up answers on, not actual pool care. But the certification matters when you want to add commercial accounts (hotels, HOAs, apartments) to your route. Most commercial contracts require it. Billing Will Make or Break You

You can be the best pool tech in your city and still go broke if you cannot bill properly. This came up repeatedly.

Build Your Network Before You Need It

Pool service can be isolating. You spend all day alone in backyards. When you hit a problem you have never seen, you need someone to call.

Your local pool supply store is the easiest place to start. The counter staff see every pool pro in town. They know who is good, who is available for subcontract work, and who specializes in repairs you do not do yet. Join your local IPSSA chapter if one exists in your area.

Online communities matter too. Reddit's r/PoolPros, Facebook pool service groups, and industry podcasts give you access to thousands of pros who have solved the problem you are facing right now.

Showing Up Is 80% of the Job

This sounds too simple, but it is the most consistent feedback from experienced pros.

The bar in pool service is low. Many companies no-show, run late, or do splash-and-dash visits where they barely touch the pool. If you show up on the same day every week, do the work properly, and communicate with the customer, you are already better than most of your competition.

Reliability builds trust. Trust builds referrals. Referrals build your route. One pro said he built his entire business without spending a dollar on marketing because his customers referred him to everyone they knew.

Be Honest About What You Don't Know

New pros feel pressure to have all the answers. You do not need to. Customers respect honesty more than a confident wrong answer.

"If I didn't know something I was honest and would tell them 'I don't know, but I'll find out.' Personal relationships saved me the most. I wasn't the most knowledgeable pool guy going into it, but I was easy to deal with and people liked my vibe."

When you hit something unfamiliar, say so. Then go find the answer. Call another pro, look it up in the pool glossary, or use our AI equipment troubleshooter. Come back to the customer with the right answer and they will trust you more, not less.

Tools That Save You Time

Several pros recommended specific tools they wish they had from day one:

• Bottom Feeder net. Expensive but cuts netting time dramatically. One 20-year veteran called it one of his best purchases.
• MileIQ or similar mileage tracking app. You need this for taxes. Every mile between pools is deductible. Start tracking from day one or you will lose thousands at tax time.
• A separate business phone. Turn it off on Friday night, check it Sunday evening. Separating work and personal calls protects your sanity.
• A wholesaler account. Set one up at your local SCP or Heritage location. Ask questions, learn part numbers, and build the relationship before you need emergency parts.

Watch Out for Bad Route Purchases

Buying a route is a common way to jump-start a pool business. But one pro shared a warning:

"Don't buy a route. I know a pool guy who has worked the same area for years. He routinely takes contracts for the less profitable ones, bundles them up, and sells them to an unsuspecting newbie. A year or two later, more than half the clients have left."

Not every route for sale is a bad deal. But do your due diligence. Check customer retention rates. Talk to the customers before you buy. Look at the route density on a map. Take Care of Yourself

Pool service is physical outdoor work. Heat, chemicals, and long days take a toll. The advice that got the most upvotes in the thread was not about pools at all:

Simple advice. Hard to argue with. You are working in the sun with chemicals. Dehydration plus a hangover plus muriatic acid fumes is a recipe for a bad day. Show up rested, hydrated, and ready to work. Your body and your customers will thank you.
