Why free chlorine drops in an outdoor pool

Free chlorine does not stay at one level all day. Sunlight breaks it down, contaminants consume it, and warmer water can increase chlorine demand. The reading from a test kit is therefore a measurement at one point in a changing process.

How sunlight affects chlorine

Ultraviolet light can break down free chlorine in an uncovered outdoor pool. Loss is usually fastest during the brightest part of the day. Cloud cover, shade, pool covers, and the amount of cyanuric acid in the water all affect how much chlorine is exposed.

What cyanuric acid changes

Cyanuric acid, commonly called CYA or stabilizer, reduces chlorine’s exposure to UV light. That can help an outdoor pool retain chlorine during the day. CYA does not prevent chlorine from being consumed by swimmers, leaves, dirt, or other contaminants.

More CYA is not automatically better. CYA also changes how quickly chlorine disinfects the water. The appropriate operating range depends on the pool, sanitizer system, bather load, and applicable health rules.

Swimmers, debris, and water temperature

Swimmers introduce sweat, sunscreen, dirt, and other material that reacts with chlorine. Leaves and windblown debris create additional demand. Higher water temperature can increase the rate of these reactions, which is why a busy warm pool can lose chlorine even when it has CYA.
