Pentair Prowler 910 Not Reaching All Areas of the Pool
The Prowler 910 navigates the pool floor on a random pattern during its approximately 1.5-hour cleaning cycle, reversing direction when it contacts the pool wall. If sections of the pool floor are consistently dirty after a cycle, the cleaner is not reaching those areas. The Prowler 910 manual identifies three causes: the power supply is positioned on the wrong side of the pool, algae on the floor reduces traction, or the pool filter pump is running during the cleaning cycle and its circulation currents push the cleaner away from the walls.
Important: The Prowler 910 Is Independent of Your Pool Pump
The Prowler 910 is a self-contained robotic cleaner with its own power supply. It does not connect to or require the pool pump to operate. However, running the pool pump and filter at the same time as the Prowler 910 creates circulation currents that actively interfere with the cleaner's movement and coverage.
Cause 1: Power Supply Positioned Incorrectly
The power supply sits on the pool deck and the 40-foot communication cable runs into the pool from that fixed point. The cable length is the cleaner's effective reach radius. If the power supply is placed at one end of the pool or at a corner, the cable pulls taut before the cleaner can reach the opposite wall or far corners, leaving those areas uncleaned.
Fix
- Move the power supply to the center of the longest wall of the pool — this gives the cleaner the maximum effective reach in all directions
- The power supply must remain on dry, level ground at least 6 feet from the pool edge; do not place it on a wet surface or near the water line
- Feed the cable straight down from the power supply into the center of the pool; avoid laying cable at a diagonal angle along the pool edge
- For rectangular pools, centering on the long wall means the cable reaches both short walls equally; for round or oval pools, center on any wall
- Remove excess cable from the pool — only feed as much cable as is needed to reach the far end of the pool
- Run a full cleaning cycle (~1.5 hours) and observe whether the cleaner now reaches all pool walls
Cause 2: Algae on the Pool Floor
Algae growth on the pool floor creates a slick surface that reduces the cleaner's traction. When the tracks can't grip properly, the cleaner's drive system spins without moving the cleaner forward — the cleaner stalls in an area instead of traveling across the pool. Algae-covered patches effectively become no-go zones that the cleaner cannot cross.
Fix
- Do not run the Prowler 910 in a pool with active algae growth — the cleaner cannot clean effectively and may stall repeatedly
- Brush the entire pool floor and walls with a pool brush to break up the algae layer
- Shock the pool with an appropriate chlorine dose to kill the algae
- Correct all water chemistry parameters: free chlorine, pH (7.2–7.6), total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and stabilizer (30–50 ppm for outdoor pools)
- Run the pool filter pump until the water clears and the algae bloom is resolved — this may take 24–72 hours depending on severity
- Once the pool is clear, run the Prowler 910 for a full cleaning cycle
Cause 3: Pool Filter Pump Running During Cleaning Cycle
The pool filter pump creates circulation currents throughout the pool. These currents push water — and the lightweight Prowler 910 — away from the walls and toward the pool's center or return jets. When the cleaner approaches a wall or corner, circulation currents can deflect it before it makes contact, causing it to consistently miss the areas near the walls.
Fix
- Turn off the pool filter pump and any auxiliary equipment (waterfalls, jets, spa blowers) before starting a Prowler 910 cleaning cycle
- Place the Prowler 910 in the pool, connect the cable to the power supply, and start the cleaning cycle
- The cleaning cycle runs approximately 1.5 hours; the cleaner auto-stops when the cycle is complete
- After removing the Prowler 910 from the pool, restart the pool filter pump and resume normal filtration
Scheduling Tip
Run the Prowler 910 during off-hours when the pool is not in use — early morning before swimmers arrive, or late evening after they leave. Turn off the filter pump before starting the cleaning cycle. Once the cycle is complete and the cleaner is removed, restart the filter pump and run it for its normal daily duration.
