Pentair Prowler 910 Moving in Circles

A Prowler 910 that spins in tight circles instead of tracking straight across the pool floor is not cleaning. The cleaner relies on both tracks running at the same speed; anything that creates an imbalance — debris, wear, a misaligned lid, or algae — causes one track to grip less than the other and the cleaner curves or spins. The Prowler 910 manual identifies five distinct causes, each with a different fix.

⚠ Always Unplug Before Inspecting: Turn off and unplug the power supply before removing the cleaner from the pool for inspection or cleaning. Never leave the cleaner running unattended if you observe it moving abnormally.

Cause 1: Dirt Stuck in Moving Parts

Sand, fine grit, leaves, or hair can pack into the track rollers, wheels, and brush assembly. Even small amounts of debris can increase resistance on one side, causing the cleaner to pull toward that side in a continuous arc.

Fix

  1. Unplug the power supply and remove the cleaner from the pool using the handle
  2. Rinse the entire cleaner with a garden hose
  3. Inspect both tracks (P/N 360342) — spin each track by hand and feel for gritty resistance or binding spots
  4. Remove any packed debris from the track rollers and the area around the wheels
  5. Inspect the active brush (P/N 360345) — hair or string wrapped around the brush ends can transfer drag to the drive system; remove all foreign material
  6. Spin both tracks again by hand to confirm equal, smooth resistance before returning the cleaner to the pool

After-Use Maintenance

Rinse the tracks, wheels, and brush assembly with clean water after every use. Debris buildup is the most common and easiest-to-prevent cause of circular movement. A quick rinse after each cycle extends track life and keeps the cleaner tracking straight.

Cause 2: Worn Tracks

With extended use, the rubber on the tracks wears thin and loses its grip on the pool floor. If one track wears faster than the other — which is common if the cleaner has repeatedly turned the same direction — the traction difference causes the cleaner to arc continuously toward the worn side.

Fix

  1. Remove the cleaner from the pool and place it on a flat surface
  2. Visually inspect both tracks (P/N 360342) for uneven wear, cracking, or missing tread
  3. If tracks are worn, contact your Pentair dealer for a replacement set — track replacement requires removing the bottom cover and disengaging the drive rollers; refer to the dealer or service center for this repair

Track wear is normal after a full season of use in a frequently used pool. Replacing both tracks at the same time ensures equal grip on both sides and avoids re-entering a wear imbalance.

Cause 3: Power Supply Positioned Incorrectly

The power supply sits on the pool deck and the cable runs down into the pool from a fixed point. If the power supply is placed at one end or at a corner, the cable enters the water at an angle and creates a constant lateral pull on the cleaner. This is enough to deflect the cleaner's straight-line path into a curve or a circle, especially in smaller pools.

Fix

  1. Move the power supply to the center of the longest wall of the pool
  2. The power supply must remain on dry ground at least 6 feet from the pool edge
  3. Feed the cable straight down from the power supply into the center of the pool — avoid draping the cable at an angle
  4. Run another full cleaning cycle and observe whether the cleaner now tracks across the full pool floor

Cause 4: Wrong Mounting of Bottom Lid

The bottom lid (also called the bottom cover) houses the inlet flap and seals the underside of the cleaner. If the lid is not locked in the correct position, it can shift during operation. An off-center lid changes the water flow pattern through the cleaner body and creates asymmetric suction, which causes the cleaner to turn in one direction.

Fix

  1. Remove the cleaner from the pool
  2. Locate the bottom lid on the underside of the cleaner
  3. Confirm the lid is seated flat and locked in the correct orientation — there is typically a locking tab or alignment indicator; refer to the Prowler 910 manual for the correct lid position for your unit
  4. Press the lid firmly until the lock clicks into place
  5. Return the cleaner to the pool and run another cycle

Cause 5: Algae in the Pool

A pool with algae growth on the walls or floor is slippery. The cleaner's tracks cannot grip a slick algae-covered surface the way they grip a clean pool surface. If algae is heavier on one section of the pool floor, one track loses traction while the other grips, and the cleaner spins toward the slippery side.

Fix

  1. Do not run the Prowler 910 in a pool with active algae growth — the cleaner will not clean effectively and may develop a tracking problem that persists even after the algae is treated
  2. Brush the pool walls and floor with a pool brush to break up the algae
  3. Shock the pool and correct water chemistry — chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer should all be within normal ranges
  4. Run the pool filter pump until the water clears
  5. Once the pool is clear and chemistry is balanced, run the Prowler 910 for a cleaning cycle
