Pentair IntelliTouch Communication Errors
Pentair IntelliTouch uses RS-485 serial communication to interface with IntelliChlor salt chlorinators and IntelliFlo variable-speed pumps. Communication faults cause the associated device to stop responding to automation commands. This guide walks through the IntelliTouch COM port wiring, error messages, and device-specific checks for diagnosing and resolving communication errors.
IntelliTouch COM Port Wiring
The IntelliTouch Personality board provides two COM ports (J7 and J8) for connecting accessories. The COM port is a 4-pin terminal block with the following pin assignments:
| Pin | Wire Color | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| PIN 4 | Red | +15 VDC |
| PIN 3 | Yellow | +DATA |
| PIN 2 | Green | −DATA |
| PIN 1 | Black | Ground |
Use either or both COM ports. Devices that connect to the IntelliTouch COM port include: Indoor Control Panel, RF Transceiver (MobileTouch/QuickTouch), SpaCommand and iS10 spa-side remotes, IntelliFlo pumps, IntelliChlor salt chlorine generators, IntelliChem, and UltraTemp heat pumps.
Gas heaters (MasterTemp, MaxFlo) connect to the GAS HEATER screw terminals on the Personality board — not the RS-485 COM port. Consult the heater installation guide for the correct wiring. Do not bypass the heater's internal thermostat, high-limit switch, or other safety devices.
Electrical Safety
Turn off the load center main breaker before opening the enclosure or handling any wiring. COM cables run alongside 240V conductors inside the same enclosure. Verify power is absent with a multimeter before touching any terminal.
IntelliChlor COM LINK ERROR
IntelliChlor communication status is displayed via Menu > Setup > Equipment > Chlorinator. The communication-specific error is:
| Status Message | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| COM LINK ERROR | IntelliChlor is not communicating with the IntelliTouch Personality board | Check the cable from IntelliChlor to the IntelliTouch COM port. Verify correct polarity at both ends. |
Other IntelliChlor messages (OK–NO ERRORS, LOW SALT, VERY LOW SALT, CHECK FLOW/PCB, HIGH CURRENT, CLEAN CELL!!, LOW VOLTAGE, SUPER CHLORINATE) reflect salt or cell conditions, not communication errors.
Wiring Check Procedure
Before electrical testing, perform a visual inspection with the load center de-energized:
- Confirm each wire in the COM terminal block is fully seated and the screw is snug.
- Inspect the insulation on the COM cable where it enters the load center knockout. Conduit edges can nick insulation over time, causing a short between conductors.
- Check the connector at the device end of the cable for bent pins, corrosion, or debris.
- Verify data polarity — PIN 3 (yellow, +DATA) must connect to the +DATA terminal at the device, and PIN 2 (green, −DATA) must connect to the −DATA terminal. Reversed polarity prevents communication entirely.
- Check the low-voltage circuit breakers on the Personality board as part of any troubleshooting. IntelliTouch has 3 Amp circuit breakers for the low-voltage circuits located to the far right of the outdoor control panel.
Device-Specific Checks
IntelliChlor
- IntelliChlor requires all four conductors. PIN 4 (red, +15 VDC) powers the IntelliChlor communication circuit. Measure between the red (+15 VDC) and black (ground) wires at the IntelliChlor connector with the system powered; you should read approximately 15V DC.
- Verify PIN 3 (yellow, +DATA) and PIN 2 (green, −DATA) are connected correctly. The IntelliChlor wiring table shows that +DATA (yellow on IntelliTouch) connects to the BLACK wire on commonly-used salt chlorine generators, and −DATA (green on IntelliTouch) connects to the YELLOW wire. Always verify with the chlorine generator's own documentation.
- Inspect the connector at the IntelliChlor housing for corrosion or bent pins.
IntelliFlo
IntelliFlo pumps connect to the IntelliTouch COM port using the two-wire RS-485 cable (P/N 350122, 50 feet). IntelliTouch can support up to eight IntelliFlo VF pumps and four IntelliFlo VS pumps in various combinations. Each pump must have a unique address assigned on the pump itself.
For IntelliFlo VS pumps: Press and hold both Start and Stop buttons until the red LED flashes, then press Speed button 1, 2, 3, or 4 to set the address. Press and hold Start and Stop again to save. (VS addresses 1–4 only.)
For IntelliFlo VF pumps: Press the Menu button, navigate to Pool Data > Pump Address, select the address, and press Enter to save. (VF addresses 1–8.)
For IntelliFlo VSF pumps: Press Menu, navigate to Settings > Pump Address, set the address, and press Enter. (VSF addresses 1–16.)
The address set on the pump must match the pump assignment in the IntelliTouch Equipment screen (Menu > Setup > Equipment > IntelliFlo). Note: When IntelliTouch is in Service mode, IntelliFlo pumps will stop — this is normal behavior.
Cable Testing with a Multimeter
Continuity test (cable disconnected at both ends)
- Disconnect the cable at the COM terminal block and at the device end.
- In resistance mode, test each conductor end-to-end. Good conductors read near 0 Ω. An open circuit (OL) indicates a broken wire.
- With the cable disconnected, measure resistance between each pair of conductors. You should read very high resistance between any two conductors. A low-resistance reading indicates a short.
Voltage test (live, with device connected)
With the system powered, measure DC voltage between PIN 4 (red, +15 VDC) and PIN 1 (black, ground) at the device end of the cable. You should read approximately 15V DC. A low reading indicates a wiring problem or a failing Personality board supply.
Distinguishing Cable Fault from Device Failure
| Observation | Most Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| COM LINK ERROR persists after cable replacement and polarity verification | IntelliChlor PCB failed, or Personality board COM port failed |
| +15 VDC present at IntelliChlor connector but COM LINK ERROR persists | IntelliChlor PCB failed; try replacement cell |
| Replacing the device resolves the error | Device PCB was failed; Personality board is good |
| Replacing the device does not resolve the error | Cable fault or Personality board COM port failure |
