This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Pentair IntelliTouch pool and spa automation control system. Whether you are a homeowner trying to figure out why your Indoor Control Panel is blank or a service technician diagnosing communication faults between the load center and spa-side remotes, this wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.
Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including wiring checks, COM port testing, and transceiver troubleshooting. Each symptom card links to a comprehensive written guide when you need to go deeper.
The table below summarizes the most common Pentair IntelliTouch problems and their root causes. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis of each issue.
| Symptom | Common Root Cause |
|---|---|
| Indoor Panel Blank | Bad wiring run from Personality board, incorrect wire order, or defective Indoor Control Panel PCB |
| Mismatched Personality | Controller replaced or memory erased while unplugged, causing system personality conflict (e.g., i9+3 vs i10+3D) |
| Temperature Sensor Error | Pool or spa water temp sensor, air sensor, or solar sensor cable open/shorted or routed near interference source |
| iS4 / iS10 Not Working | Spa-side remote disabled from main panel, incorrect circuit assignment, or defective wiring to COM port |
| MobileTouch Inaccurate Temp | Temperature sensor cables routed within 6 inches of fluorescent lighting, causing signal interference |
| QuickTouch Range Issues | Receiver address switch mismatch, transmitter battery failure, or electrical noise from nearby equipment |
| IntelliFlo Priming Alarm | Pump unable to prime within max priming time; generates permanent alarm after 5 failed attempts |
| IntelliFlo Over Current | Drive overloaded or motor electrical problem; pump restarts 20 seconds after condition clears |
| Scheduled Programs Not Running | Manual Op Priority override active, clock not set, or circuits assigned to wrong program slots |
| Chlorinator Communication Lost | IntelliChlor wiring fault, PCB connector corrosion, or salt cell cable damaged |

A blank Indoor Control Panel usually indicates a wiring problem between the panel and the Personality board in the Load Center or Power Center. Check for broken or shorted wires and verify the screw terminal connections. If the wires are crossed (incorrect order), it can cause permanent damage to the PCB. Use a short test cable connected directly to the Personality board COM port to isolate the issue. If a known-good cable still produces a blank screen, the Indoor Control Panel PCB may need replacement.
A mismatched system personality message appears when the Indoor Control Panel, MobileTouch, or Outdoor Control Panel have different system type identifiers (e.g., i9+3 vs i10+3D). This typically happens when a controller is replaced (new controllers ship as i9+3 by default), when memory is erased while unplugged, or when the system personality is changed. Press NEXT on the message screen to update the controller to match the system. If you are a service technician using the controller for a different purpose, press IGNORE.
First check that spa-side remotes are enabled. Using the Indoor Control Panel, press MENU and look for "SPA SIDE REMOTE ENABLED." If it reads "DISABLED," press the button beside the option to toggle it. Next, verify the remote's circuit assignments by navigating to MENU, SETUP, ADVANCED, SPA RF & PHONE REMOTES and selecting CONFIGURE IS4s or CONFIGURE IS10s. Make sure the remote has expected circuit assignments and is not assigned to unused circuits. Also check the COM port wiring for breaks or loose connections.
An inaccurate MobileTouch wireless controller temperature reading (while the air temperature reads correctly) is typically caused by signal interference on the temperature sensor cables. The solution is to ensure the temperature sensor cables connecting the sensor to the Load Center are not routed within six inches of any fluorescent lighting fixture. Rerouting the cables away from interference sources should resolve the inaccuracy.
To reset the Outdoor Control Panel to factory defaults, press the RESET button on the panel. This will erase all system settings including circuit assignments, schedules, and equipment configuration. All controllers will need to be manually re-enabled after a factory reset. Be aware that this is not reversible, so only perform a factory reset when you are prepared to reconfigure the entire system from scratch. For the Indoor Control Panel, you can force a download from the Outdoor Control Panel memory to restore settings.
Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as wiring inspections, COM port testing, and PCB diagnostics are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair involving electrical wiring or control board work.
