Pentair IntelliCenter Freeze Protection Setup

Freeze damage is one of the most expensive repairs a pool owner can face. A burst pipe or cracked pump housing from a single cold night can cost thousands of dollars. The Pentair IntelliCenter includes a built-in freeze protection system that automatically activates circuits when temperatures drop — but each circuit must be individually assigned to freeze protection, and the cycle timing must be configured correctly in the Delays settings.

How IntelliCenter Freeze Protection Works

IntelliCenter monitors air temperature using the air temperature sensor at the equipment pad. Freeze protection is activated when the outdoor air temperature drops to 36°F. When this threshold is reached, the system cycles through all circuits that have been assigned freeze protection and runs them to prevent pipes from freezing.

When freeze protection is active, FREEZE PROTECT ACTIVE is displayed on the Home screen. The system continues running the assigned circuits until the freeze condition is over.

For pool and spa combination systems: if freeze protection is assigned to both the spa and pool circuits, the filter pump switches on and the pool and spa valves alternate to keep water moving in both bodies. The main pool filter circulation pump is freeze protected as long as freeze protection is set to ON for that circuit.

Assigning Circuits to Freeze Protection

Freeze protection must be assigned individually to each circuit that should run during a freeze event. To assign freeze protection to an AUX circuit:

1. Go to Settings > Advanced System Configuration > Installation Setup > Circuits > AUX Circuits.
2. Select the circuit to configure.
3. Tap Freeze Protection and set it to ON.

The same option is available for Feature Circuits via Settings > Advanced System Configuration > Installation Setup > Circuits > Feature Circuits.

Which Circuits to Assign

Assign freeze protection to circuits that circulate water or control equipment that could be damaged by standing frozen water:

• Filter pump — The primary defense against frozen pipes; always assign.
• Booster pump — Assign if present; pump housings can crack.
• Cleaner circuit — Assign if the cleaner lines hold standing water.
• Spa pump — Assign for pool/spa combination systems to keep spa plumbing protected.
• Waterfall / spillover features — Assign if exposed piping could freeze.

Do not assign circuits that do not benefit from running during a freeze — such as pool and spa lights or non-water landscape circuits.

Configuring Freeze Cycle Time and Spa Freeze Override

The Delays settings control the timing behavior of freeze protection. Access them at Settings > Advanced System Configuration > Delays.

Heater Behavior During Freeze Protection

The heater will not activate during a freeze protection period unless it is manually turned on. Freeze protection is designed to circulate water through the plumbing, not to heat it. If you want the heater to run during a freeze event, it must be turned on manually from the Pool or Spa screen.

Manually Overriding Freeze Protection

The pool pump can be manually turned on to override the freeze protection state. This also applies when a schedule is running. From the Home screen, tap the Pool (or Spa) icon and tap the pump button to turn it on manually. The manual override also applies when a schedule is active at the same time as freeze protection.

For the spa specifically: use the Spa Freeze Override Time setting (under Delays) to allow the spa pump and heater to run during freezing temperatures without interrupting the automated freeze protection cycle for the rest of the system.

Delay Settings Summary

The Delays screen (Settings > Advanced System Configuration > Delays) contains all delay-related settings for the system, not just freeze protection:

• Valve Delay (ON/OFF): When ON, the pool/spa pump is off for 1 minute during valve rotation.
• Heater Cool Down (ON/OFF): When ON, runs the filter pump for an additional period after the heater shuts off to dissipate residual heat.
• Freeze Cycle Time: 5 to 60 minutes; default 5 minutes.
• Spa Freeze Override: 0 to 240 minutes.
• Override Delays: Tap this button to cancel any system delays currently in progress. A yellow badge on the Home screen Pool/Spa icon indicates a valve rotation delay is in progress.

Freeze Protection vs. Winterization

IntelliCenter freeze protection keeps water moving to prevent freezing. It is a supplemental protection measure for mild climates with occasional frost, not a substitute for winterization in climates with sustained freezing temperatures.
