This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Pentair IntelliCenter pool and spa automation control system. Whether you are a pool homeowner trying to understand a status alert on your touchscreen or a service technician diagnosing RS-485 communication faults, the wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.
Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including wiring checks, sensor resistance measurements, and firmware troubleshooting. Each symptom card links to a comprehensive written guide when you need to go deeper.
The table below summarizes the most common Pentair IntelliCenter alerts and error conditions. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis of each issue.
| Alert / Error | Description |
|---|---|
| Sensor Error | Air, water, or solar temperature sensor not detected or reading out of range |
| Communication Lost | RS-485 communication cable between IntelliCenter and connected equipment is disrupted |
| Priming Alarm | IntelliFlo pump failed to prime within maximum priming time after five attempts |
| Over Current | Pump drive is overloaded or motor has an electrical problem |
| Over Voltage | Excessive supply voltage or external water source causing pump motor to generate voltage |
| Drive Temperature | Pump drive has exceeded 130°F and is reducing speed to cool down |
| Low Salt | IntelliChlor salt level below optimal 3600 ppm — chlorine production is reduced |
| Clean Cell | Calcium buildup detected on IntelliChlor cell blades — cleaning required |
| Blocked System | IntelliFlo pump detected a blocked suction line — auto-resets after 30 seconds |
| Power Outage | Pump has sensed that a power outage occurred and needs restart |

Communication Lost means the IntelliCenter control panel has lost its RS-485 data connection to a piece of connected equipment such as an IntelliFlo pump, IntelliChlor salt cell, or a connected heater. The most common cause is a loose or damaged RS-485 cable. Check the wiring at both the IntelliCenter load center and the equipment. Power cycling the equipment can also resolve transient communication errors.
A Sensor Error on the IntelliCenter means one of the temperature sensors (air, water, or solar) is not detected or is reading out of range. The system continuously monitors all sensors. Common causes include a disconnected sensor plug at the J21 connector on the motherboard, a damaged sensor cable, or a failed thermistor. Check the sensor wiring connections at the load center motherboard first.
Navigate to Settings, then Advanced System Configuration, then Restore Factory Defaults. You will be prompted to confirm. This will overwrite all current system configuration with the original factory settings. Note that this erases all schedules, circuit names, pump configurations, and network settings. Only perform a factory reset as a last resort after other troubleshooting steps have failed.
A Priming Alarm means the IntelliFlo pump was unable to establish water flow within the maximum priming time. If the pump cannot prime within five attempts, it generates a permanent alarm that must be manually reset. Check that the pool water level is high enough to fill the skimmer basket, clear any debris from the pump and skimmer baskets, and make sure suction and discharge valves are fully open. Bleed air from the top of the filter during priming.
Navigate to Settings, then Advanced System Configuration, then System Information, then System Diagnostic. The diagnostic displays detected hardware, firmware versions, and any detected issues. You can also view the Status screen on the Home screen to see current alerts, warnings, and sensor error logs with timestamps. Export status logs to a USB device via Settings, Advanced System Configuration, Import/Export.
Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as RS-485 wiring checks and sensor resistance measurements are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
