Pentair Kreepy Krauly Going in Circles or Repetitive Pattern

A Kreepy Krauly that traces the same path over and over — circling a section of pool floor, repeatedly reversing at the same point, or sweeping the same lane — is not malfunctioning in the traditional sense. The cleaner is moving, but its steering is compromised. The Pentair manual identifies three causes for repetitive pattern behavior: the swivel on top of the cleaner is not turning freely, the return eyeball is pushing water in a way that biases the cleaner toward one path, or a section of hose has a permanent kink or set that steers the cleaner in one direction.

Check 1: Test the Swivel

The swivel is the rotating connector at the top of the Kreepy Krauly where the hose attaches to the cleaner body. Its purpose is to allow the hose to rotate independently from the cleaner so the cleaner can change direction freely. If the swivel is stiff or seized, it binds the hose and cleaner together, forcing the cleaner into a circular path dictated by the hose lay.

  1. Turn off the pump and remove the cleaner from the pool
  2. Grasp the hose connection and the cleaner body separately and attempt to rotate them against each other — the swivel should turn smoothly with minimal resistance through a full 360 degrees
  3. If the swivel is stiff or does not rotate freely, disassemble it by pulling the hose fitting away from the cleaner top and inspect the swivel internals for grit, mineral deposits, or debris
  4. Rinse the swivel components in clean water and work them back and forth to free any deposits
  5. Reassemble and retest rotation before returning to the pool
  6. If the swivel cannot be freed, replace the swivel assembly

Check 2: Redirect the Eyeball Diverter

The eyeball diverter (P/N K121680) controls the direction of the return flow entering the pool. A return jet aimed directly at the cleaner or its hose path can consistently push the cleaner back along the same route every time it passes.

  1. With the pump running, observe the cleaner moving through its repetitive pattern and note which direction the return fitting is aimed
  2. Reach into the pool and rotate the eyeball fitting to direct water toward a different part of the pool — typically aiming toward a corner or area the cleaner is not reaching
  3. Observe the cleaner for several minutes to determine whether the pattern breaks up
  4. Fine-tune the eyeball direction if needed — the goal is to create a water current that gently pushes the cleaner into previously uncleaned areas

Check 3: Inspect the Hose for Kinks and Permanent Set

Hose sections that have been stored coiled, left in the sun, or kinked against a pool edge develop a permanent curve or set. A hose section that curves to the right, for example, will steer the cleaner to the right every time that section passes through the pool, creating a predictable repetitive path. The manual specifies that when each hose section is removed from the pool and laid flat on the pool deck, it should lie perfectly straight and flat.

  1. Turn off the pump and remove the entire hose assembly from the pool — do not coil the hose; lay it straight along the pool deck
  2. Walk the length of the hose and observe each section lying flat on the deck — any section that curves, bows upward, or fails to lay flat has a permanent set
  3. To identify which section is the problem, flex each one between your hands — a set section will spring back to its curved shape when released
  4. Replace any section with a permanent kink or curve
  5. When not in use, always lay the hose straight along the pool deck rather than coiling it — coiling causes the hose to retain the coil shape and reproduce the same repetitive pattern when reinstalled
⚠ Hose Storage: Never store the Kreepy Krauly hose by coiling it around a reel or in a bucket. Lay each section straight on the pool deck or hang sections individually. A hose that retains coil memory will cause repetitive pattern problems regardless of swivel or eyeball adjustments.
