Pentair IntelliFlo VSF Over Current Alarm

The over current alarm on the Pentair IntelliFlo VSF indicates the drive is overloaded or the motor has an electrical problem. This is an alarm condition — the red alarm light illuminates and all control panel buttons are disabled until the alarm is cleared.

How the Alarm Works

The over current alarm indicates that the drive is overloaded or the motor has an electrical problem. The drive will restart automatically 20 seconds after the over current condition clears. If the condition does not clear, the alarm will remain active.

Causes and Corrective Actions

Low Supply Voltage (may appear as "Low Voltage" alarm)

Check voltage at the motor terminals and at the panel while the pump is running. If voltage is low, see the wiring instructions or consult the power company.

Loose Connections

Check for loose connections at the motor terminals and in the field wiring compartment. Tighten any loose wiring connections. Loose connections increase resistance and can cause intermittent over current conditions.

Line Voltage Out of Range

Check line voltage. If the supply voltage is less than 90% or more than 110% of the rated voltage, consult a licensed electrician. Operating outside of this range can cause the drive to fault on over current.

Motor Electrical Problem

If voltage and connections check out, the motor itself may have an electrical problem. Turn power to the motor off. Check for proper voltage at the motor terminals. Check for a proper impeller or impeller rubbing, which can place excessive mechanical load on the motor and cause electrical overload conditions.

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Check voltage at the motor terminals while the pump is running. Compare to the rated voltage on the motor nameplate.
  2. Inspect all wiring connections in the field wiring compartment for looseness or corrosion.
  3. Verify line voltage is within 90–110% of rated voltage.
  4. If voltage and connections are correct, allow the drive to restart automatically after 20 seconds and observe whether the alarm recurs.
  5. If the alarm persists, the motor or drive may require service. Contact Pentair Technical Service at 1-800-831-7133.
