Pentair IntelliFlo VS+ SVRS Overheat Alarm
The IntelliFlo VS+ SVRS pump monitors its internal drive temperature and takes protective action when it exceeds the threshold. Unlike some alarms that shut the pump down immediately, the overheat alert causes the pump to gradually reduce speed rather than stop abruptly.
How the Overheat Alert Works
If the drive temperature exceeds 130°F (54°C), the IntelliFlo VS+ SVRS will slowly reduce pump speed until the over-temperature condition clears. The pump does not shut off immediately—it throttles down to allow the drive to cool while keeping the system circulating.
The control panel alarm LED will be lit when this alert condition exists. All control panel buttons are disabled until the alarm is acknowledged with the Enter button. Once the fault condition has been resolved, press the Reset button to clear the alarm.
The IntelliFlo VS+ SVRS also includes an automatic internal cutoff switch to protect the motor from heat damage during operation.
Corrective Actions
The following corrective actions come from the General Troubleshooting table in the official manual (listed under "Electrical problem / Over Heat alert"):
- Check line voltage; if less than 90% or more than 110% of rated voltage, consult a licensed electrician.
- Check for loose connections and tighten any loose wiring connections.
- Increase ventilation around the pump motor and drive enclosure.
- Reduce ambient temperature in the pump equipment area.
- Check for proper voltage at motor terminals and at the meter while the pump is running.
- Check for proper impeller installation or impeller rubbing.
Minimum and Maximum Speed Limits
The VS+ SVRS operates from 1100 RPM to 3450 RPM. User-defined minimum and maximum speed limits are available via the pump's Settings menu:
- Set Minimum Speed: adjustable from 1100–1700 RPM (default 1100 RPM)
- Set Maximum Speed: adjustable from 1900–3450 RPM (default 3450 RPM)
If the pump consistently approaches overheat conditions at high speed, reducing the maximum speed limit may help prevent the alert from recurring.
Anti-Freeze and Overheat Interaction
The anti-freeze feature causes the motor to run at a preset RPM until the drive temperature increases above the minimum threshold. When the pump activates anti-freeze mode, the drive temperature rises. This is normal operation. See the Anti-Freeze Protection article for full details on configuring and disabling this feature.
The pump's internal antifreeze protection is disabled when the pump is connected to an automation system (IntelliTouch or EasyTouch). In that case, freeze protection is provided by the automation system's air temperature sensor.
