This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Pentair IntelliFlo 3 VSF variable speed and flow pump (also covers IntelliFlo3 and IntelliPro3 VSF models). Whether you are a pool homeowner trying to decode an alarm on your pump's LED indicators or a service technician running a structured diagnostic, the wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.
Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including drive LED interpretation, wiring inspections, and motor diagnostics. Each symptom card links to a comprehensive written guide when you need to go deeper.
The table below summarizes the most common Pentair IntelliFlo 3 VSF alarm and warning codes and their meanings. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis of each code.
| Alarm / Warning | Description |
|---|---|
| Priming Failure | Pump could not achieve prime within the maximum priming duration — ON/STOP LED blinks red |
| Overheat | Motor detected abnormally high internal temperature — pump reduces speed to cool down |
| Over Current | Motor load increased due to debris, part interference, temperature, or voltage issues |
| Over Voltage | Supplied voltage is outside proper range — resumes when voltage returns to normal |
| Under Voltage | Supplied voltage is below proper range — resumes when voltage returns to normal |
| Internal Fault | Internal hardware or software error in the drive — power cycle to attempt reset |
| Derating Alarm | Pump stopped to prevent drive from overheating — auto-resumes when cooled |
| Pump Offline | Pentair Pool app cannot connect to pump — WiFi, Bluetooth, or power issue |
| Speed Limit | Warning: pump at maximum speed but cannot achieve desired flow rate |
| Pressure Limit | Warning: pump at maximum system pressure — may differ from filter gauge reading |

Priming Failure means the pump could not detect adequate water flow within the configured maximum priming duration. The ON/STOP LED will blink red indicating an alarm. Common causes include air leaks in the suction line, low water level in the pool, a clogged strainer basket, or a worn strainer pot lid O-ring. Fill the strainer pot with water, check for air leaks, and clean the basket before restarting.
The IntelliFlo 3 VSF uses LED indicators on the CONNECT and ON/STOP buttons. ON/STOP solid green means the pump is running; blinking green means priming; pulsing green means Thermal Mode; solid red means disabled; blinking red means alarm detected; blinking green/yellow means warning detected; solid yellow means idle. CONNECT green means WiFi connected; blue means Bluetooth connected; yellow pulsing means provisioning needed; magenta means automation control is active.
An offline status means the Pentair cloud cannot connect to your pump. Common causes include a power outage at the pump or router, loss of WiFi signal, or an intermittent network connection. First confirm the pump has power (ON/STOP LED should be illuminated). Then restart your home router, cycle power to the pump, and check WiFi signal strength in the Pentair Pool app. If signal is weak, the WiFi antenna can be relocated using a SMA extension cable.
A Derating Alarm means the motor and drive could not reduce speed enough to protect themselves from overheating. The motor stops completely. This usually accompanies an Overheat or Over Current condition. When the drive cools enough, it will automatically resume operation and attempt to run the requested program. If this occurs repeatedly, check for blocked ventilation, debris in the fan guard, or excessive ambient temperature around the pump.
To restore system defaults (keeps network settings and PIN), disable the pump then press and hold both the CONNECT and QUICK CLEAN buttons for 3 seconds. To perform a full factory reset (erases all settings including WiFi and PIN), this can only be done using the drive controls. Note that a factory reset will delete all custom programs and schedules, restoring everything to factory defaults.
Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as drive inspections and motor disassembly are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
