This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Pentair IntelliChem water chemistry controller. Whether you are a pool homeowner trying to understand an alarm on your controller display or a service technician running a structured diagnostic, the wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.
Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including sensor testing, calibration verification, and feed system inspection. Each symptom card links to a comprehensive written guide when you need to go deeper.
The table below summarizes the most common Pentair IntelliChem alarms and their meanings. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis of each alarm.
| Alarm | Description |
|---|---|
| pH HIGH / pH LOW | pH reading has exceeded the high (7.8) or low (6.8) alarm threshold for the configured delay period |
| ORP HIGH / ORP LOW | ORP reading has exceeded the high (750 mV) or low (650 mV) alarm threshold |
| pH/ORP Dose Limit | Daily chemical feed limit reached — system stopped dosing to prevent overfeed |
| No Flow Detected | Flow switch not sensing water circulation through the flow cell |
| Auto Calibration Failed | Internal meter self-test detected an out-of-tolerance condition on the pH or ORP circuit |
| pH >7.8 Lockout | ORP dosing suspended because pH is too high for sanitizer to be effective |
| UOC Comm Err | RS-485 communication lost between IntelliChem and the automation controller |
| SCG Comm Err | Communication lost with the IntelliChlor salt chlorine generator |
| SI Scaling / SI Corrosive | Langelier Saturation Index indicates water is scaling or corrosive |
The "No Flow Detected" alarm means the flow switch in the IntelliChem flow cell is not detecting water circulation. This is a safety feature that prevents chemical dosing without water flow. Check that your pool pump is running, all valves are open, and sufficient water is directed through the flow cell. Do not bypass the flow switch — it prevents dangerous chemical concentrations.
The pH Dose Limit alarm means IntelliChem has reached its configured daily maximum for acid dosing. This safety feature prevents chemical overfeed. Common causes include heavy bather load, high temperatures, or improperly balanced water. Check the Saturation Index, increase the daily dose limit if appropriate, and consider extending filter run time to allow more dosing cycles.
Auto Calibration Failed means the IntelliChem's internal self-test detected the pH or ORP measurement circuit is out of tolerance. Common causes include moisture or condensation on the circuit board, dirty contacts, or a hardware fault. Check that the enclosure is dry and the circuit board is clean. If the error persists after drying the unit, the circuit board may need replacement.
The pH >7.8 Lockout is a safety feature that stops ORP (sanitizer) dosing when the pH exceeds 7.8. At high pH levels, chlorine becomes much less effective, so adding more sanitizer is wasteful and potentially harmful. The correct action is to first lower the pH with acid dosing. Often, simply bringing the pH down will release enough free chlorine to raise the ORP without additional sanitizer dosing.
Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as sensor resistance testing and calibration procedures are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
