This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Pentair EasyTouch 4 and EasyTouch 8 pool and spa automation control systems. Whether you are a pool homeowner trying to understand an error message on your control panel display or a service technician running the built-in self-test diagnostic, the wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.
Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including relay testing, sensor measurements, and wiring inspections. Each symptom card links to a comprehensive written guide when you need to go deeper.
The table below summarizes the most common Pentair EasyTouch errors, self-test codes, and status messages. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis of each issue.
| Error / Code | Description |
|---|---|
| Air Err | Air temperature sensor not connected to J21 connector on the EasyTouch motherboard |
| Water Temp Err | Water temperature sensor not connected or defective at J21 connector |
| Solar Temp Err | Solar temperature sensor not connected to J21 connector on the motherboard |
| Self-Test Code 0 | PASS — control panel has no problems detected |
| Self-Test Code 1 | LCD backlight fault detected during self-test |
| Self-Test Code 3 | LEDs on control panel not functioning correctly |
| Self-Test Code 4 | Switch (button) fault detected on control panel |
| Self-Test Code 6 | Sensor, relay, or valve test failure |
| COM LINK ERROR | IntelliChlor communication error with EasyTouch motherboard |
| IChem Comm Error | RS-485 communication between EasyTouch and IntelliChem is lost |

Air Err means the EasyTouch system cannot detect the air temperature sensor. The sensor plug connects to the J21 connector on the motherboard inside the load center. Check that the plug is firmly seated and the sensor wire is not damaged. If the connection looks good, the sensor itself (a 10K ohm thermistor with a 25-foot cable) may need replacement.
The self-test is accessed through Menu, Diagnostics, Self Test. Code 0 means PASS with no problems. Code 1 indicates an LCD backlight issue, Code 2 is LCD contrast, Code 3 is LEDs, Code 4 is switch/button problems, Code 5 is a UART loopback test failure, and Code 6 is a sensor/relay/valve test failure. Multiple codes can appear at once if multiple issues are detected.
If the indoor control panel screen is blank with no LEDs or button response, the most common cause is a bad wiring run from the outdoor control panel or motherboard in the load center. The four-conductor cable connecting the panels is the likely culprit, especially the two center wires (green and yellow). Verify the cable connections and check for broken wires under the insulation.
COM LINK ERROR means the IntelliChlor salt chlorine generator has lost communication with the EasyTouch motherboard. Check the cable running from the IntelliChlor cell to the motherboard. Ensure the connection is secure at both ends. Access the IntelliChlor diagnostic through Menu, Diagnostics, Chlorinator to see the current status.
Navigate to Settings, then Erase EEPROM. You will be prompted to confirm with "Erase ALL?" and then "Are You Sure?" before the system erases all data and restores factory defaults. The display will blank out and then return to the main screen. This erases all schedules, circuit names, and custom settings, so only do this as a last resort.
Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as relay testing and motherboard inspections are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
PoolDial helps pool service professionals manage customers, routes, billing, and equipment tracking from one place. Try it free for 30 days.
