About This Tool

This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed specifically for the Hayward SwimClear top manifold cartridge filter series, covering models C2030 (225 sq ft), C3030 (325 sq ft), C4030 (425 sq ft), C5030 (525 sq ft), and C7030 (680 sq ft). These filters use multiple reusable, reinforced polyester cartridge elements to provide high-clarity water filtration for fresh or salt water swimming pools and spas.

Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including cartridge inspection, manifold checks, and pressure testing.

SwimClear Filter Symptom Quick Reference

Symptom Common Causes
High Filter Pressure Dirty cartridge elements, calcified pleats, undersized filter, restricted return plumbing
Short Filter Cycles Algae in pool, improper chemical balance, cartridges past useful life, undersized filter
Low Water Flow Clogged baskets, air leak in suction line, dirty cartridges, plumbing restrictions
Air in System Suction-side air leak, low pool water level, loose pump lid, failing shaft seal
Filter Leaking Worn DEX2422Z2 seal, insufficient clamp torque, cracked tank body, loose drain plug
Cloudy Water Improper chemistry, insufficient run time, damaged cartridges, low flow rate
Cartridge Wear Starting pressure 6+ PSI above new cartridge baseline, collapsed or frayed pleats

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I clean my SwimClear cartridge elements?

Clean the cartridge elements when the pressure gauge rises 7-10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. After installing clean cartridges, mark the starting pressure with the green arrow on the gauge. When the needle reaches the red arrow, it is time to clean. Frequency depends on pool usage and environmental factors, but most residential pools need cartridge cleaning every 4-8 weeks.

How do I clean SwimClear cartridge elements?

Turn off pumps and power, open the air relief valve, drain the filter, and remove the clamp. Lift off the upper body, remove the top manifold, and pull each cartridge element out using a slight rocking motion. Clean each cartridge inside and out with a garden hose, then carefully brush the pleated surface to remove fine particles. Do not pressure wash as it can damage the elements. Reassemble with the DEX2422Z2 seal and torque the clamp to 150 inch-lbs.

When should I replace SwimClear cartridge elements instead of cleaning them?

Replace cartridges when the starting pressure after cleaning is more than 6 PSI above the original starting pressure with new cartridges. Also replace if the pleats are frayed, collapsed, crushed, or if the element end caps are cracked. Most cartridge elements last 1-2 years with proper maintenance depending on pool conditions.

What is the maximum working pressure for a SwimClear filter?

The maximum working pressure for all Hayward SwimClear models is 50 PSI (3.45 bar). Never operate the filter above this pressure. If the gauge approaches 50 PSI, shut off the pump immediately and clean the cartridges. Pressure testing in excess of 50 PSI can cause explosive component separation.

Which cartridge element do I need for my SwimClear model?

Each model uses specific cartridge elements: C2030 uses CX481XRE (4 required), C3030 uses CX580XRE (4 required), C4030 uses CX880XRE (4 required), C5030 uses CX1280XRE (4 required), and C7030 uses CX591XRE (8 required). Four-packs are available for each model for convenience. Always use genuine Hayward replacement cartridges.

Can I use this troubleshooter if I am not a pool professional?

Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
