About This Tool

This interactive troubleshooting wizard is designed for the Hayward Navigator and PoolVac series suction pool cleaners (Navigator Pro, Pool Vac XL, Navigator, and Pool Vac Ultra). Whether you are a pool owner trying to figure out why your cleaner stopped moving or a service technician running a structured diagnostic, the wizard adapts to your role and provides the appropriate level of guidance.

Select the "Homeowner" role for safe, practical checks you can perform yourself, or switch to "Technician" mode for detailed diagnostic procedures including flow gauge readings, component inspections, and parts replacement guidance.

Common Navigator Symptoms Quick Reference

The table below summarizes the most common Hayward Navigator issues and their primary causes. Click the troubleshooter above for step-by-step diagnosis.

Symptom Common Causes
Slow / No Movement Low water flow, blockage in cleaner throat, worn shoes or wings
Won't Climb Walls Improper shoes, insufficient suction, worn wings, rear flap set incorrectly
Climbs Too High / Sucks Air Excessive water flow, rear flap adjuster wrong position, steering failure
Stuck on Steps / Corners Improper water flow, worn shoes/wings, hose too short, steering failure
Cleaner Floating Trapped air in cleaner head, air entering return lines, hose lifted by water current
Hose Tangling / Twisting Cleaner turning in one direction only, coiled hose memory, improper storage
Turns in One Direction Only Worn A-frame/turbine, excessive play between A-frame and pod

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Hayward Navigator not moving?

The most common cause is insufficient water flow through the cleaner. Use the in-line flow gauge provided with the cleaner to verify the black disk is between the MIN and MAX markings. Also check for blockages in the cleaner throat, worn shoes, and worn wings. If the pump is not providing enough suction, the Navigator will not have enough power to move.

Why won't my Navigator climb the walls?

First verify the flow gauge reading is correct. Then check that the rear flap adjuster is set to Position III for maximum wall climbing suction. Inspect shoes and wings for wear. The pool must have at least a 7-inch radius where the walls and floor meet for the cleaner to climb. Due to programmed steering, the Navigator will not climb every wall it contacts.

Why does my Navigator keep getting stuck on steps?

If the cleaner gets hung up on steps or obstacles, try turning the rear flapper adjuster to Position I. Also verify the hose length is correct (should reach the farthest point of the pool plus 2 extra sections) and check the water flow with the flow gauge. Worn shoes, wings, or a steering failure in the gearbox can also cause the cleaner to get stuck.

Why is my Navigator hose tangling or twisting?

If the hoses are twisted like a pretzel, the cleaner is turning in only one direction, indicating a steering problem. Check the gearbox, cone gear, and A-frame/pod connections. If the hose is curling (not twisting), it has developed a memory from improper storage. Lay the hoses straight in direct sunlight to straighten them. Never coil the hose when storing.

How do I use the flow gauge on a Hayward Navigator?

Connect the flow gauge to the leader hose and clip it to the first hose section. Make sure the gauge is submerged underwater. Turn the pump on and check that the black disk floats between the MIN and MAX markings. If it is above MAX, reduce suction using the regulator valve or system valves. If it is below MIN, there is a system issue that needs to be addressed before the cleaner will work properly.

Can I use this troubleshooter if I am not a pool professional?

Yes. Select the "Homeowner" role and the wizard will show only the checks that are safe and practical for a non-professional to perform. Technician-level steps such as component disassembly and parts replacement are hidden unless you switch to Technician mode. Always follow the safety warnings on screen, and consult a licensed pool service professional for any repair you are not comfortable performing.
