Finding the Right Replacement

Pool equipment gets discontinued every few years as manufacturers release newer models. The plumbing footprint usually stays the same within a brand, making upgrades straightforward. But knowing which model replaces which - and what changed - saves you time researching at the supply house.

What Usually Changes Between Generations

  • Pumps: Newer models add flow sensing, improved drives, better connectivity (WiFi/Bluetooth), ENERGY STAR ratings, and quieter operation. Plumbing connections almost always remain the same within a product line.
  • Heaters: Updated heat exchangers (cupro-nickel vs. standard copper), improved ignition systems, better controls, and tighter emissions. Gas connections and plumbing ports usually match predecessors.
  • Salt cells: Larger plate surface area, reverse polarity improvements, better scale resistance, and longer expected life. Power centers get better diagnostics. Cell dimensions may change between generations.
  • Automation: More relay outputs, WiFi built-in (vs. add-on), better touchscreen interfaces, expanded device support, and cloud connectivity.

Cross-Brand Replacements

Sometimes the best replacement isn't the same brand. If a Hayward EcoStar fails and the customer doesn't have Hayward automation, a Pentair IntelliFlo3 or another brand may be a better fit. Consider the automation system on the pad - same-brand pump-to-automation gives you the most features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the new model fit the same plumbing?

In almost all cases, yes - within the same brand and product line. Manufacturers design successors to be drop-in replacements. Port sizes, heights, and footprints are kept the same so you don't have to re-plumb. The exception is major platform changes (like going from a horizontal to vertical pump design) - but those are rare.

Do I need to reprogram the automation for a new pump?

Usually yes, you'll need to re-discover or re-add the new pump in the automation system. Same-brand replacements are typically automatic or one-button (scan for new devices). Cross-brand replacements may require setting up as a generic relay device instead of a fully integrated VS pump.

My equipment is discontinued - can I still get parts?

Parts are typically available for 7-10 years after discontinuation. After that, you're looking at aftermarket suppliers or used parts from eBay/pool equipment recyclers. For critical components (like a drive assembly), check availability before deciding whether to repair or replace.

Should I upgrade to the latest model or buy the previous generation cheaper?

If you can find new-old-stock of the previous generation at a discount, it's often a great deal. The core performance is usually similar. The main reasons to go latest-gen: better warranty coverage, parts availability for longer, and specific new features you actually need (like built-in WiFi or flow sensing).

Can I use a different brand as a replacement?

Absolutely. If the customer doesn't have brand-specific automation, any VS pump will work. Just match the HP rating and plumbing size. If they DO have automation (IntelliCenter, OmniLogic, AquaLink), strongly recommend staying within that brand for the pump to keep full RS-485 integration.
