How Pool Equipment Serial Numbers Work

Each manufacturer encodes the date of manufacture into the serial number using a different system. Once you know the pattern, you can read the age of any piece of pool equipment in seconds.

Pentair Serial Numbers

Pentair uses a week-year format in most of their equipment. The serial typically starts with digits representing the production line or model code, followed by the date code. Look for a pattern like XXYYWW or embedded date digits where YY = year and WW = week of the year (01-52). For IntelliFlo pumps manufactured after 2010, the format is often a longer numeric string where positions 4-5 = year and positions 6-7 = week.

Hayward Serial Numbers

Hayward typically uses a letter-based date code in their serial numbers. A common format uses the first one or two letters to encode the year (A=2001 or 2021, B=2002 or 2022, etc.) and the next letter or digits for the month. For newer equipment (post-2015), look for a 4-digit year-week code embedded in the serial (e.g., 2318 = week 18 of 2023).

Jandy / Zodiac Serial Numbers

Jandy (now Fluidra/Zodiac) uses several formats depending on the era and product line. Newer Jandy equipment often uses a YYWW format in the first four digits of the serial. Older equipment may use a letter code where the first letter indicates the year. AquaPure and TruClear salt cells typically have the date code in positions 3-6 of the serial.

Raypak Serial Numbers

Raypak heaters use a straightforward date code. The first four digits are typically MMYY (month and two-digit year) or YYMM depending on the production era. Very old units (pre-2000) use a different letter-based system.

Typical Equipment Lifespans

  • Variable speed pump - 8-12 years
  • Single speed pump - 8-15 years
  • Gas heater - 7-12 years
  • Heat pump - 10-15 years
  • Salt cell - 3-7 years (cell only, not power center)
  • Cartridge filter - 8-15 years (tank); 1-3 years (cartridge elements)
  • DE filter - 10-20 years (tank); 5-8 years (grids)
  • Automation controller - 10-15 years
  • LED light - 8-15 years

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the serial number on a pool pump?

Look for a silver or white sticker on the side of the motor housing, usually near the wiring compartment or on the pump body itself. On VS pumps, it's often on the drive (top) or the back of the motor. If the sticker has worn off, check inside the wiring compartment lid.

Where is the serial number on a pool heater?

Open the front panel of the heater. The data plate is usually on the inside of the front door or on the left/right side panel interior. It's a metal plate riveted to the frame with model, serial, and BTU rating. On some Raypak units, it's on the right side exterior.

My serial number doesn't match any pattern - what do I do?

Manufacturers have changed their serial number formats several times over the decades. If the tool can't decode it, try contacting the manufacturer with your full serial number - most have a customer service line that can look it up. Also check if you're reading the MODEL number instead of the SERIAL number - they're different stickers on some equipment.

Does the manufacture date tell me the install date?

Not exactly. Equipment typically sits in a warehouse or distributor for 1-6 months before installation. For warranty purposes, the install date is what matters - but the manufacture date gives you a good estimate of the equipment's total age. If you don't have install records, assume manufacture date + 3 months.

How accurate are the lifespan estimates?

They're averages based on typical residential use in moderate climates. Equipment in harsh environments (coastal salt air, extreme heat, high calcium water) may fail sooner. Well-maintained equipment with proper water chemistry often exceeds these averages. Salt cells in particular vary wildly - a cell in balanced water with proper calcium can last 7+ years, while one in aggressive water may only last 2-3.
