Waterway ProClean Plus Diagnostic Guide
Waterway ProClean Plus Diagnostic Guide
The ProClean Plus manuals separate low-flow complaints by gauge pressure and list different causes for short cycles, a repeatedly plugged cartridge, water that will not clear, and a cleaner that loses performance. Record the clean starting pressure before diagnosing a pressure rise.
Safety: Stop the pump, open the air-release valve, remove the drain cap, and wait until all pressure is released and the tank is drained before loosening the filter ring. Never operate above 50 PSI or 104°F. A damaged tank, ring, lid, gauge, or air-release assembly requires qualified service.
Pressure and flow combinations
| Display or symptom | What it means | Manual-backed check |
|---|---|---|
| Low flow / high pressure | The cartridge may be plugged, downstream piping may be blocked, or the piping may be undersized. | Clean the cartridge using the manual procedure. Check the return path for obstruction. Have a dealer evaluate pipe sizing rather than forcing more pressure. |
| Low flow / low pressure | The pump or its debris basket may be plugged. | Shut the system down and clean the pump basket. Qualified service can inspect the impeller if flow remains low. |
| Pressure rises 10 PSI | The normal cleaning threshold has been reached. | Follow the complete pressure-release, disassembly, and cartridge-cleaning procedure. Clean sooner when an attached fountain or cleaner loses needed flow. |
Water-quality and cycle symptoms
| Display or symptom | What it means | Manual-backed check |
|---|---|---|
| Short cycle time | Low sanitizer residual, a dirty cartridge, unbalanced water, algae, or a spent cartridge can shorten the local normal cycle. | Verify water balance and sanitizer with the applicable product labels, clean the cartridge thoroughly, and replace it if damage or persistent loading remains. |
| Cartridge plugs repeatedly | Incomplete cleaning, unbalanced water, excess tank air, iron, algae, powdered-tablet binder, or incompatible PHMB cleaners may load the cartridge. | Clean correctly, vent the tank, check the suction side for air, and have iron or chemistry problems corrected. A cartridge exposed to incompatible PHMB cleaner must be replaced. |
| Pool water does not clear | The manual lists low sanitizer, a torn or punctured cartridge, iron, binder residue, algae, or a cartridge that needs replacement. | Inspect the cartridge for tears or punctures, confirm sanitizer and water balance, and use a pool professional for iron or persistent algae. |
| Pool cleaner loses performance | A dirty filter may reduce the flow available to the cleaner. | Clean the filter and compare cleaner performance. If performance returns, use a cleaning interval shorter than a 10-PSI rise. |
Cartridge and chemistry boundaries
| Display or symptom | What it means | Manual-backed check |
|---|---|---|
| PHMB sanitizer system | PHMB systems require compatible cartridge cleaner and more thorough, frequent cleaning. | Use only the PHMB-compatible cleaner specified by its manufacturer; other cleaner types can require cartridge replacement and may void the filter warranty. |
| Iron or recurring algae | The filter manual identifies these as water-treatment problems rather than internal filter faults. | Keep the filter operating within its pressure boundary and have the source-water or treatment problem corrected instead of repeatedly replacing filter hardware. |
| Torn or punctured cartridge | Damaged media can allow debris to bypass filtration. | Replace the cartridge with the model-matched element; cleaning cannot repair torn or punctured media. |
